Arizona has been a permitless carry state since 2010. Anyone 21 or older who may legally have a firearm can carry it concealed or openly, with no license and no class. Under 21, carrying concealed is still an offense under A.R.S. 13-3102, so younger adults carry openly or keep the gun cased in a vehicle. The optional Concealed Weapons Permit is issued statewide by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, not by the county sheriff. The Pinaleno Mountains and Mount Graham rise straight out of the Gila Valley south of town in Units 31 and 32, which run from the river down to Willcox. Coues whitetail, javelina and black bear hunts all draw here, on Coronado National Forest ground.

Roper Lake State Park lies south of town at the foot of the Pinalenos, and the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area follows the river northeast toward Clifton.
